The Burden sisters argued at the European Court of Human Rights that they should be treated as civil partners for inheritance tax purposes

In the Daily Mail's main Comment article on 25 July, Catherine Utley explained how successive governments have justified their refusal to allow inheritance tax deferral to cohabiting family members with a circular argument. Argue for the extension of civil partnerships to family members and you are told that the injustice they suffer chiefly concerns inheritance tax and that civil partnerships are not the right way to address it. But argue for a change to inheritance tax rules and you are told that two people who have not made a legal commitment to each other cannot be expected to be entitled to be treated in the same way for inheritance tax purposes as those who have.
